Schulenburg has done a series of interiors and exteriors of a 19th-century building, Café Heaven, on Commercial Street in Provincetown. Sometimes they include a solitary figure, which is a central element of many of Hopper’s paintings. The mood, which some would call lonely, marks much of Hopper’s work. He taps into an emotional center that some view as sad or somber. But Schulenburg sees it as “solitude in a good way.” He feels the influence of Hopper’s “subject matter, the look and pensive, mysterious, contemplative emotions of his work.”
